It is with regret that we must inform you that the BEDFORD20 will not take place in 2019…and possibly beyond. We approached Bedford Borough Council last year with a detailed proposal to stage an annual 20 mile event late March as a training run for anyone doing a Spring Marathon.

It took months to get a decision and we were finally informed last December that the guardians of Priory Country Park had granted our wish and we would be the last annual event to take place in the park.

We even got permission to have a drone at the event to film a video at considerable expense to show off the stunning location and promote future races.

After this years event we had a de-brief with the council and they were very happy with how we put on the event and we discussed a few changes and improvements moving forward. A date was agreed for 2019 and everything was looking good.

This summer we spoke to the events team at the council to submit our paperwork and were told to hold off as another running event had applied for a three year sole use events license for the park! We were stunned as this eliminates competition and could not believe that the council would seriously consider this option.

Unfortunately they did consider it and actually gave a sole use license to MCD Events Ltd who organise the Bedford Half Marathon in September. This means that the BEDFORD20 and other commercial running events can’t get a license to run in the park for the next three years.

We were offered an alternative location the other side of Bedford and have tried to come up with a nice route but just can not make it work, so it is with considerable regret that it looks like this event will not survive.

We’ll keep looking a for a good flat 2 lap 20 mile route in the hope that we can bounce back in 2020.

This has been a very hard lesson for us as we put so much effort into the event.

Keep on running!

The BEDFORD 20 Team.
